With the world population rising the demand for energy is escalating at a fast rate. We can no more overlook the energy crisis which is imminent in the near future. But as every problem has a solution, similarly this energy problem also has a solution – alternative sources of energy or renewal energy.
Most of the energy that we use in our daily life comes from fossil fuels but fossil fuels are not infinite but alternative energy sources are infinite. The energy that we can harness from wind, sun, water and other natural sources can be used again and again. In recent times wind energy has become a reliable source of energy and governments of different countries are promoting it enthusiastically.
In order to harness
wind energy we need windmills, these windmills convert wind energy into electrical energy which is then supplied to our homes through gridlines. In many farms located in interiors without any electricity, windmills are the only source of power. Many countries are promoting the use of clean energy like Germany, Spain, India, Denmark and some areas of United States.
The concept of windmills is not new but using it to produce energy is comparatively a new technology. Although initially the cost of wind energy was very high but in recent times with rapid development in technology and increase in demand, the cost of producing wind energy has drastically reduced by 80%.
A lot of people who understand the importance of using clean energy are nowadays installing windmills in their own homes. Initially installing a windmill may seem costly but in the long run it pays off. It saves you a lot of money from the ever increasing electric bill, it does not require much maintenance so you don’t have to spend a lot of money to keep it running and unlike conventional energy sources it does not cause environmental pollution.
But there are certain drawbacks also. Although it is a renewal source of energy, it is almost perpetual like the sun but it is unpredictable. So unless you are living in an area where the minimum wind speed is between 9-12 mph generation of electricity is not possible. Another drawback is that the blades of the windmill create noise so although they may not cause harm to the environment but they cause noise pollution.
Because of some of these drawbacks generally windmills are maintained and operated by companies. They develop wind farms in favorable wind places where rows of wind generators are placed. The current produced is then connected to an electrical grid from where it reaches to our home.
Wind generators are no doubt beneficial and a clean source energy. Looking at the future there is no doubt that they will be playing a much bigger role and maybe with advancement of technology their drawbacks will be overcome.
